History

The LeVeque Tower, located at 50 West Broad Street, is a 47-story, Art Deco style building. Among Columbus’ most noteworthy architectural jewels, Leveque Tower stood as the city’s tallest building from its completion in 1927 well into the 1970’s. Originally constructed as the Citadel of the American Insurance Union, the building boasts a distinctive oak bark terra-cotta exterior decorated with carved mythical and historical art pieces. Inside, the building evokes a classic era, with details and decorations unmatched in today’s modern architecture. In 1975 the tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places. At Broad and Front Streets, Leveque Tower is located just steps from the state capital in a premier location “On the Square” – a bustling area flanked with offices, retail, city and state offices, and dining options. The building is also uniquely situated with unobstructed views of the Scioto River and the Columbus skyline. Designed by renowned architect C. Howard Crane, famous for designing some of the most lavish theaters and buildings around the country, Leveque Tower stands at the very heart of downtown Columbus, defining the city’s skyline.

Modern Renovations

Recent renovations at Leveque include a newly renovated 2nd floor retail concourse greeting tenants as they enter the Building from the Tower Garage. The concourse features new carpeting, paint, ceiling, lighting, Roger’s Café, the Tower Salon, Tower Dry-Cleaning and the new LeVeque History Gallery; a collection of beautiful black and white photographs from the Columbus Historical Society depicting the areas around Broad and Front street in the early part of the 20th century. The 2nd floor retail concourse also features a new non-smoking Tenant Lounge. The Lounge is a great place to take a break, featuring a 42” Plasma TV, a vending area, new flooring, tables, and chairs. LeVeque has 24-hour guard service and a skywalk on the 2nd floor to One Columbus providing easy access to Starbuck’s, the Palace Theater, and Hallmark Sundry Shop.

Towering Heights Facts

The LeVeque Tower is 555 feet 6 inches tall. At the time of completion in 1927, it was the tallest building in Columbus, the tallest building between New York City and Chicago and the 5th tallest building in the world!
The LeVeque Tower was designed to be 1 foot taller than the Washington Monument. Modern measuring tools have shown that the actual height of the Washington Monument is 555 feet, 5 1/8th inches tall, making the LeVeque Tower only 7/8th inches taller than the Washington Monument.
